3 Tips for Great Photography Packaging

How many of you consider packaging an after thought? Something you HAVE to do? Don’t worry, you’re not alone!

Here are three easy tips for starting your journey to incorporating great packaging into your studio. And remember, don’t compare yourself to everyone else, do what works best and is right for you!

1. Identify the personality of your brand
Take some time and really identify what your brand is, what is the look, the feel in terms of something tangible. Do you and your images exude a natural, earthy feel? Are you sleek and modern? Carefree and whimsical? Once you settle on your personality this helps narrow your options down in packaging.

BONUS TIP: The personality of brand doesn’t always match 100% with your own individual personality. So don’t get caught up in buying packaging that is fun and colorful because that is what you like, when you’re trying to convey a sleek and elegant look!

2. Be Economical
Listen… a great, professional look does not have to break the bank. You do not need real, gold foil embossed leather boxes to be a professional photographer and to look your best.

Do your research, find a packaging solution that first, fits your personality and then find something that also fits your photography pricing structure. Remember that you do get what you pay for so you don’t want the cheapest, but you also don’t need the most expensive.

BONUS TIP: If you’re a new photographer your packaging should be considered a marketing cost and built in to your price list from the beginning.  So take some time and do a little research to start so you know what you want to cover in your costs.

3. Find Flexibility

Find a packaging partner that gives you flexibility in customizing your packaging and supporting materials.  You don’t want to have to order a 100 of something… what if you decide it doesn’t work and need to change.

Think about being different and unique in what you give each of your clients.  Make the packaging about them, give them their experience, not the same the client before them, and before them, and before them…

BONUS TIP: Consider packaging options that have longevity for your client. Like a Transformer… you give it to them one way, and they turn around and continue to use it as something else!  It’s also a nice thing to do for the earth!

100 Day Challenge

It’s our 100 Day Challenge! Wondering what the heck is it? We’ve decided to challenge ourselves and to post new content to our social channels for 100 days! To be honest I’m already feeling a little daunted by the task.

What type of photography do you shoot? How long have you been in business?: I am a wedding photographer and I have been in business since 2012.

When did you first join the Kraft & Jute family?: I joined the Kraft & Jute Family in 2014.

What steps did you go through when creating your packaging? Any advice to photographers beginning to use packaging?: A couple of years ago I completely re-branded. I went from photographing babies and families to solely focusing on engagements and weddings. With so many wonderful options out there I took my time choosing the items that I felt truly reflected my style and my brand. I wanted the products I selected to coordinate with the overall look of my newly designed website, so I selected colors and products that matched my romantic, natural and simple style and I found all of that with Kraft & Jute. The advice that I would give to other photographers is to make sure that you are happy with the overall look of your brand before you start purchasing products that match it. I am proud of the products I selected and I get excited to send off my packaging to clients. Re-branding can be time consuming and a little nerve wracking but it was the best decision I ever made for my business.

Why do you feel that packaging is so important to your brand?: I want my clients to feel loved and appreciated from beginning to end. There are sweet and simple ways to show that you appreciate their business. I want to leave a lasting impression on my clients, and that begins with the wedding magazine they receive when they book me and it ends with their wedding package. It’s my way of showing them just how much I value them and in a digital world I find that holding something tangible is irreplaceable. The Burlap Flash Drive Pouch is one of my favorite details and the mini print release I send each client fits perfectly inside the pouch. I absolutely love the Kraft & Jute Keepsake Box for delivering engagement sessions. It’s the perfect size box to hold 4 x 6 prints and I use the Kraft and Jute Presentation Box for delivering weddings because it can hold a cookbook, something I love sending to couples. Best advice that you’ve ever been given in your photography career? Showcase the type of work that you want to be shooting on your website and say “no” to work that you aren’t passionate about shooting. Before I made the decision to photograph only couples my website had a little bit of everything, from high school seniors to corporate head shots. I felt like my work was all over the place and I didn’t like how I was representing my brand. Once I re-branded and showcased the types of weddings that I wanted to be shooting, my ideal client was able to find me. Also, your editing style is going to evolve over time, but don’t go crazy over all the different presets. Find a style that is timeless and a true reflection of your brand.

Busy Season… Take a Deep Breath, and Email Me!

I’m a business owner (mom, wife and a bunch of other things) and sometimes I get overwhelmed. How about you?

I’ve said this before in a post but I love learning, so I’ve been reading many books lately and the one I’m currently reading has been giving me some great motivational support at a time when things are loading up and getting busy.

So I’m going to share one of my favorite points from my most recent read:

“Most of us go through life as failures because we are waiting for the ‘time to be right’ to start doing something worthwhile. Do not wait. The time will never be “just right”. Start where you stand, work with whatever tools you may have at your command, and better tools will be found as you go along.” (Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill, 2005)

So here is where I start!  I’ve been thinking about this idea for awhile now, but I’m starting.  I love to teach, counsel, help and see other’s grow – in whatever part of life or business it may be.
